To the human sitting on the patio drinking coffee, I am barely a ripple in the summer air. A slender, hovering shadow. They call me the Javelin wasp. I am a guardian ghost, keeping silent watch over this green sanctuary from a completely different dimension of patience.

The human focuses on a different player entirely. Their eyes follow a formidable, heavy-set non-native species muscling its way through the leaves. To the hurried observer, it may seem like the elusive massive black Sculptor owns this space.

They'd be wrong…

True mastery doesn’t require brute force. It requires time. Cold domination. The perfect instrument and nature in balance.

I am the true Javelin (Gasteruption jaculator). And I am about to rewrite who survives this summer.

The Emerging Survival Race

Just landing on a rose leaf next to me: The Sculptor—or better said, the living-dead collector.

This uninvited force—a non-native Isodontia mexicana—operates with loud, instinctive arrogance. The Sculptor cuts through the afternoon heat, ignoring the destructive aphids to target the true heroes of the foliage: the fragile, lime-green katydid nymphs on the potted roses. I call these aphid-hunting katydids The Living Statues.

The Sculptor’s work is terrifyingly absolute. It tracks down these little Meconema thalassinum nymphs.

The Sculptor doesn’t destroy them. Destruction spoils the harvest. Instead, The Sculptor delivers a highly clinical touch. It tears away the link between their minds and their mechanics.

Total paralysis.

They are completely entombed in their own bodies. Their hearts pump in absolute stillness. Their wide-open eyes stare into nothingness as The Sculptor drags them into the 25-centimeter copper tube of the human’s wind chime. One by one. Stacked in the dark like green cordwood. The Sculptor is building a pristine, breathing graveyard for an unborn offspring.

I observe from the shadows as The Sculptor packs the final blades of dry grass into the mouth of the metallic cylinder. Sealing the victims in the dark. The Sculptor flies away to find another soul. The Sculptor is satisfied.

The Sculptor believes that grass plug is an impenetrable sanctuary.

It is a tomb.

The Infiltration

The tension in the air is suffocating. I land on the woven grass barrier. It is a masterpiece of rustic engineering. But my design operates on a completely different level.

I deploy my signature tool. A hair-thin, impossibly long needle. It isn’t a weapon for a brawl. It is a key for a lock that hasn’t been invented yet.

Slowly. With fluid, agonizing precision. I slide the needle between the packed fibers of grass. No friction. The needle glides into the cold darkness of the copper cylinder. It navigates the tight space with mathematical certainty.

It slips past the frozen, helpless bodies of the Living Statues trapped inside. They are breathing in the dark. Entirely unaware. Their destiny just shattered.

Finally, the tip of my instrument finds the coordinates. The exact location. The Sculptor’s pearlescent offspring.

I drop my own offspring directly beside it.

Survival of the Fittest

The true reality of this takeover is its absolute silence.

Nature doesn’t favor the hardest worker. It favors the most strategic. My offspring will hatch first. Hours before the competition. In the pitch black of that copper tube, the law of the wild takes over. The Sculptor’s unborn larva simply cannot compete with a faster, more efficient design. It will be outpaced and replaced before it ever has a chance to claim this nursery.

My offspring inherit the entire hoard. The Sculptor’s entire summer of heavy lifting. Complex hunts on the roses. Careful curation of the breathing pantry. It all transfers to my species.

A quiet, inevitable replacement.

The Sculptor will keep returning to this wind chime. Packing more grass. Pouring heart and soul into a future that already belongs to me. The Sculptor is merely working for a ghost.

The Balance of Power

Yet, this quiet takeover serves a much larger purpose.

The Sculptor belongs to a non-native species expanding across the region. Left completely unchecked, the efficiency of the Mexican wasp would eventually deplete the local katydid guardians, leaving the garden’s roses entirely defenseless against actual pests like aphids. By stepping in, my species acts as the ultimate environmental safety valve. We contain the expansion. We keep the new arrival from rewriting the local landscape.

For the human on the patio, hosting this silent showdown is an absolute organic badge of honor. Creatures this specialized do not gather in sterile, chemically treated spaces. The presence of both the Sculptor and the Javelin is undeniable proof of a deeply complex, thriving ecosystem operating right in the garden.

Because of this silent intervention, the pressure on the garden shifts. The surviving katydid nymphs on the roses are granted a reprieve. They will mature. They will guard the leaves. They will lay the eggs that secure the next generation of natural pest control.

.Outside, a light breeze stirs the patio. The copper tubes chime cheerfully for the human. It is a melody of a backyard in perfect equilibrium. The non-native species is managed. The roses are protected. And inside the copper vault, the Javelin has successfully restored order to the garden.

There is some heavy, invisible weight that comes with pushing yourself past your limits. When the daily noise becomes too loud and the stress takes over, your whole body feels the pressure. You teach your body that's normal and even that it's how happy feels like. It's not true but it's true for you.

Every day round and round again like a spinner on a wheel. And this feels like a “good” life that you cling on trying to stretch yourself to the expectations of people who are either too busy using you, too busy to care or too busy being stretched too thin themselves.

So if you let your guard or anyone else down it's feeling like a reflection of your value and effort and you're left picking up the pieces of yourself and looking for anything to make sense or make it back to being on the wheel. Back to where even being too stretched and stressed felt like you had value and purpose and validation and before you lost your smile and peace.

Like a loud, cold, dreaded, slow grown and postponed summer storm, this broken feeling comes with some rocks of guilt and absurd shame and sadness like you let everyone down instead of the reality that you are burnt out and it's not about you kneeling to other people's priorities but about honoring yourself your boundaries and your mental health.

It didn’t start with a big plan. It started on a quiet evening when I finally shut my computer, sat down on the floor, and buried my hands in cool, damp dirt. In that exact moment, the noise stopped, and I finally took a real breath.

Learning to See and Feel Again

Healing doesn’t mean forcing yourself to fix the big things right away. There's no fix and flip of the button to put you and everything back in place. It simply means stepping out of the inner noise and sadness and following your bliss with baby steps.

It's about pausing the churn and choosing, for just a few minutes, to not think about the overwhelm. Instead, you look for the small things and give your attention to small things that bring you small joy.

The small things that you can notice around you take you on a magic and inconspicuous journey: look at a single flower, a new green leaf unfurling on a plant, a busy bumblebee, or a bird landing nearby.

Or close your eyes and breathe gently and open them, look up and just focus on the slow passage of white clouds moving across a clear blue sky, or listen to the soft rustling of the tree leaves swaying in the wind.

Sometimes, it is as simple as noticing how a familiar corner of your garden, or even just a patch of the concrete sidewalk, still looks so completely different and alive when the sun hits it.

Savoring the Senses

When you stop rushing, fixing or reanalyzing the same past and responsibilities, the world opens up through your senses. You begin to catch the rich smell of fresh soil, the crispness of the air right after a heavy rain, or the scent of your favorite blooming flower. You notice the sharp, sweet fragrance of a squashed strawberry or the clean aroma of freshly cut grass.

In these tiny details, you relax. You learn how to breathe again, enjoying one single moment at a time, moving gently from one micro-moment to another.

Once you find your breath, you can begin to quietly interact with the moment. You press your hands into the cool soil, sit still to watch and feed the birds, or stand completely frozen in admiration of a seated butterfly resting on a petal.

You crush a few leaves of lavender or rosemary between your fingers just to enjoy the clean scent as it drifts up.

Step by step, this is how you slip out of survival mode.

By finding these small, honest things to appreciate, you quietly enjoy yourself back into happiness, rebuild your confidence, and gently take back your life and your mental health.

The Certainty of Care

There is an absolute, grounding honesty in working with nature, the plants and animals. In a world where so many things feel unpredictable, confusing, or entirely out of your control, the soil always tells the truth.

If you plant a rose in a pot and water it with care and love, or even if you do it in a moment of total loneliness, or just as a quiet experiment to see if it actually work: it will reward you.

The plant will respond with fresh green growth and stunning blooms. Not immediately but it's an implicit promise: you promise to water it and care for it and in return it will grow and bloom for you.

If you're not in an “act of God” type of scenario it's not going to let you down. Plus in case you're not satisfied you can change your approach or just learn something and do better next time.

When you put out food for the birds, they will come to eat and find joyful comfort in your space.

If you choose to place a bowl of bright pansies on your balcony instead of leaving it empty, a butterfly or a bumblebee will eventually come to visit and fool around it.

Breathe gently and remember: you created that future moment, and its beauty belongs entirely to you.

Embracing Your Inner Hope Again

This is how you learn to trust yourself again. It is how you build a steady inner confidence that what you do actually matters, and that the beauty you create is real and undeniable.

There is so much beauty and love and loveliness in this world hiding in the small things in your garden and in nature in general.

Gardening is simply you relearning how to look into the future with positive expectations. Learning to see, appreciate and interact with the joy of life.

You begin to imagine and expect the future moments when you will sit back and enjoy the results of your own hands: the potting, the planting, the weeding.

Soon you quickly realize and relearn that you can change your space and create something you genuinely love, easily and consistently. No pressure. No guilt or justifying your value. No overwhelm or survival mode. New life. Just you and beauty.

While you can always postpone tasks in the garden, you cannot give it up entirely without consequences. It offers a gentle, daily accountability that keeps you moving forward.

It is a slow, beautiful way of growing that deep inner connection with yourself, reclaiming your confidence, and quietly reconnecting with your happiness again.

I didn’t just want a garden that looked good; I wanted one that felt like an experiential romance sanctuary, woven together by scent, beauty, roses and many other secret wonders… I wanted a rose that would climb up a trellis like it was trying to reach a Juliet balcony. Enter: the ‘Kiss Me Kate’ rose.

If you’ve just bought a bundle of bare-root sticks that look like they’ve seen better days, don’t panic. I’m right there with you. Here is everything you need to know about turning those dry sticks into the most romantic corner of your Prague garden.

Meet the Star: Kiss Me Kate (KORnagelio)

Bred by the famous German house Kordes, this rose is basically the sturdy, reliable neighbor who also happens to be drop-dead gorgeous.

It’s part of their Parfuma® collection. This means it wasn’t just bred for looks—it was bred to smell divine! While she’s known as a climbing rose that can soar up to 3 meters on flexible, incredibly easy-to-train canes, you can easily keep her as a compact, 1-to-1.5-meter shrub with just a little pruning and shaping—all while pumping out those gorgeous, 10-centimeter vintage pink blossoms.

The name itself is officially a nod to Cole Porter’s classic, dramatic 1948 Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate. But if you ask European rose enthusiasts, there’s a much juicier rumor: if the name sounds like a headline, that’s because it is!

…It`s said that Kordes’ head breeder actually named her after Kate Middleton during the height of the 2011 Royal Wedding media frenzy, when European tabloids were plastered with the phrase “Kiss me, Kate!” So whether she’s named after theater royalty or actual royalty, this rose is born to put on an absolute show.

• The look: Think “vintage romance.” The blooms are large, quartered (meaning they are packed with 40-90 petals), and a soft, nostalgic pink.

• The scent: It’s an award-winner for a reason. It starts with fresh lemon peel and green apple, then settles into a sweet raspberry heart. It’s not that dusty “grandma’s soap” rose scent; it’s fresh and fruity.

• The resilience: This is crucial for us here in Central Europe. It is highly resistant to black spot and mildew, which is a lifesaver during those damp, grey Czech autumns.

The “Bare Root” Reality Check

When my roses arrived, they didn’t look like the photos. They looked like a bundle of semi dead twigs. This is the bare root reality.

Because I want flexibility in my urban space, I chose to plant my ‘Kiss Me Kate’ roses in deep pots for their first year. Planting in containers in Prague presents a unique challenge: managing the intense, dry summer heat on a balcony or patio.

To give my “sticks” the absolute best start without drowning them in heavy clay or over-complicating things, I skipped the heavy compost and traditional fertilizers (which can burn tender new roots) and used a precise, high-tech planting cocktail instead:

• The foundation: I filled my deep pots with standard Zahradnický substrát (garden substrate), which offers a clean, well-draining base.

• The hydration insurance: To combat Prague’s increasingly dry, baking summer weeks, I mixed TerraCottem into the soil. These clever water-retaining polymers act like tiny underground reservoirs, keeping the roots consistently hydrated.

• The secret weapon: Before the roots hit the soil, I thoroughly dusted them with Symbivit Tric. These mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the rose, drastically expanding the root system’s reach to absorb water and nutrients.

• The wake-up call: After a good 24-hour initial soak in a bucket of water, I planted them, packed the soil gently, and watered them in deeply.

Because the substrate is fresh and the Symbivit is doing its magic, no extra fertilizing or compost is needed for this first year. It’s all about letting nature build its network.

The Golden Rule: Sleep, Creep, Leap

If you are new to climbing roses, memorize this mantra. It will save you from thinking you’ve failed when nothing happens in July.

1. Year 1: Sleep. The rose is busy building a root system underground. You might get a few flowers, but it’s mostly napping.

2. Year 2: Creep. You’ll see some cane growth and more blooms. It’s waking up.

3. Year 3: Leap. Boom. This is when it takes off, covering your trellis and pumping out flowers.

Landscape Dreams

I’m training mine up a black metal obelisk right in its container to contrast with the soft pink blooms. ‘Kiss Me Kate’ is incredibly versatile for city living:

• The balcony option: Yes, you can absolutely do this in a pot! Just ensure it’s a deep container (at least 40cm for the first year and 50cm onward) so those Symbivit-boosted roots have plenty of room to stretch downward.

• The “Bohemian Courtyard” look: If you eventually move it to the ground, train it against a warm, stucco wall. A south-facing position is best to catch that beautiful Czech summer sun, it needs minimally 5 hours of sun.

Why I Love It

In a city as old and stony as Prague, adding this soft, living, fragrant layer to my home makes me feel like I’m finally planted. It’s a little bit of patience, a little bit of digging, and a whole lot of hope for the season ahead.
